Romaeuropa's second appointment dedicated to music and technology with Uri Caine and Fabio Cifariello Ciardi who are joined on stage with the world stock market. With "Nasdaq Match 0.2" these two musicians propose a duo performance with the global multinationals brought together in highly imaginative orchestra which performs in a similarly imaginative auditorium, the stock market. The stage opens with a piano exhibition by Uri Caine who expresses his eclectic and unbridled talent, passing from style to style he touches classical, jazz, soul and pop with a gusto and playful bent for improvisation which is very particular indeed. The author of "Nasdaq Match", Cifariello Ciardi studied composition with Franco Donatoni, Tristan Murrail and Philippe Manoury during which time he developed his singular music style which he himself defines as «ecological, political». In this case, we could also add ironic: he collates data from the stock markets which are fed into a computer and by applying an algorithm, he transforms this data in digital sound in real time. The stock market is subject to continual variations and just like music, stock values increase and decrease second by second and so this orchestra-stock market duo requires a musician with great flexibility and who is able to improvise in different creative languages. As eclectic as ever, Uri Caine demonstrated great enthusiasm for the project and is now the solo performer of "Nasdaq Match 0.2". To create the ideal conditions for the "sMax toolkit" software, Cifariello Ciardi intervenes in real-time, dividing the stock market into various sections just like a real orchestra but based on the typologies of share: the wind section correspond to financial stocks and then utilities, education and human resource stock are represented respectively by the saxophone, bassoon, clarinet and so on. So, the laws of the economy «that we understand with difficulty but have to abide by every day» are harnessed in a functional performance to create a tapestry of sound which is then modelled and transformed by Cifariello Ciardi. Caine then attributes a musical significance to the sound with his solo pianoforte. Who knows if the economy which the experts have described as depressed for some time now cannot be resurrected through music?
