He plays at the edge of time and passing though it with his movement and gaze. In Quelqu’un va danser...(Is anyone going to dance....), created and interpreted by Radhouane El-Meddeb, the artist enters the universe of memory with a dance-like step, peering into its most intimate recesses with modesty and a total absence of fear. He debuted in last year's Romaeuropa Festival with an eccentric performance blending dance with the preparation of a dish of cous cous which was then distributed to the audience. El-Meddeb proved to be a true surprise for the public and the critics who ― with his magnetic stage presence, strong communicative abilities, massive and muscular body ―is very different from what one would expect a dancer to be but yet, capable of gracefulness, agility and irony. In his previous solo performance, the artist's tendency to address his cultural roots and past ―symbolised in this Arab dish par excellence ―is something that we find again in Quelqu’un va danser... . This time, however, it is not the aromas which pervade the stage to create that intriguing synaesthesia but a text by Camille de Toledo which transports us into a crowded place «which could be either a temple or a circus». This is where a theatre of memories is manifested and narrated, a story which could be the personal history of the protagonist accompanied by the music of Oum Kalsoum and Pëtr Il’ič Čajkovskij. The protagonist returns to his origins, his family and his landand he discovers his sexuality and passions. Trained at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Art in Tunis, in 1996 El-Meddeb was proclaimed as the «young promising actor of the Tunisian theatre». He begins his career with a focus on his acting skills which he later uses when he discovers and dedicates his creativity to dance. This transformation started in France when he moved there in 1997 to commence a promising career in theatre and cinema but then discovered his choreographic vocation. In 2005 he created and interpreted Pour en finir avec MOI which drew the attention of the critics and the following year he founded his own ensemble, Compagnia Soi, with which he has produces numerous choreographic works and has performed in various theatres and international festivals. Dancer, actor, comic and mime artist, El-Meddeb knows how to create a space for sentiment in contemporary dance.
