Instruction series III: Orang Orang

DNA danza nazionale autoriale is the second edition of a Fondazione Romaeuropa project which examines Italian authorship and creativity in the choreographic scenario by taking a transversal view into the creative and generative processes involved. DNA is a shared-space moderated by Stefano Tomassini for the public to network and to dialogue on the creative processes in this showcase.
The first evening opens with the dancer and performer Francesca Foscarini who established herself at an early age in her creative career with the public and critics with her first choreography "Kalsh" which was a finalist at the GD'A Veneto competition in 2009. Her second work, "Cantando sulle Osse" was co-produced by Kilowatt Festival and developed within the research project CHOREOROAM and presented as part of the DNA network by the Festival B.Motion/Operaestate. The question that this dancer-author asks is what happens when volition abdicates, leaving the body to be guided by movement alone; what happens when one abandons oneself to pleasure and the fear of being lost in the vast emptiness of space. In Foscarini's choreographic research, she investigates the correct placement through the fragility of the bones. In this process she is flanked by the very young Marco D'Agostino in the creation of a violator-impostor double. Everything is expressed with the title "Viola da intendersi" - Viole(nce)(t) to be intended: (viola, the Italian word for the colour violet and the third person singular of the verb to violate). Violet is the colour associated with the shortest wavelength and the highest frequency, the colour of the double, of transition but which also represents both the desire to be different and sexual charge. It encompasses the vitality of red and the intimacy of blue and when unleashed, it is a primitive, violent and instinctive force. Violet is the reasoning process of the body on its own comportment and on the consequences arising from these. While D’Agostin's work, winner of both the public and the jury's first prize at the GD’A Veneto 2010 competition, has been presented to DNA from the GD’A competition by the network Anticorpi XL, the new work *(Titolo Futuribile) by Francesca Pennini Collettivo CineticO is presented by the Teatro Comunale di Ferrara. Differently from the previous two works which have well-defined structure and duration, this latest work is presented as an on-going research project which contemplates the very process of the hypothesis which analyses the mechanisms of explanation/interpretation and shifts the focus from vision to clairvoyance. The DNA project is centred on the importance of contemporary creation which it considers as fundamental for its very existence. Therefore, we offer Collettivo CineticO an open space to sow a seed which will be what it will.
The second evening of the DNA project opens with AnnotTazioni created by and with the participation of Daniele Albanese | Compagnia Stalk, a solo work created during the preparation of the winning project for the Competition Fondo Fare Anticorpi 2010 and co-produced by Stalk and Tirdanza. This work is intended as a commentary on attraction and absence and takes the form of a series of notes on the complex composition within a simple structure. The body is subject to external attractive forces which are redesigned in a movement which in turn redefine the echo of absence. Always in the same vein of reflection on composition and corporeity we have the solo performance "Ten Thousand Leaves" by Immobile Paziente created by Caterina Inesi and interpreted by Marcella Mancini. Born from the support and collaboration of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana, this first step of a wider, on-going project commences with the music of Bartók and the search to identify a non-linear corporeal language, rich in inexact symmetries and the distortion of pre-organised models, somewhat similar to the expression of contrasting emotions. At the centre of this creative work are single identities each with their own realities, their own muscles and nerves which create a hybrid choreography, disharmonic and ambiguous at the same time. "Enduring midnight", the last proposal by Francesca Grilli, moves the focus of the evening towards a more performative perspective in which the 80 year-old soprano Lina Vasta takes the stage together with the renowned pianist Diego Mattiello. This work ―part of the project Fies Factory and co-produced with other European entities ―is not intended as a mise en scene but more the reconstruction of a sonorous memory, a poetical and analytical examination of the author on passion and its resistances. Everything gravitates around a central theme in the attempt to bring together two different conditions; the end, transformation, the rite of passage. The advancement of physical time is seen as emptying process in which the energy unleashed represents the coronation of its own passion. The last evening dedicated to DNA is left entirely to the choreography of Michele Di Stefano and the group mk with Instruction Series III: Orang,Orang in their Italian début performance. In the premises of the Opificio we have the third appearance of Instructions with Cristina Rizzo, choreographer-performer and researcher who has conducted a long-standing open dialogue with Michele Di Stefano/mk (Sonia Brunelli, author of a rigorous and penetrating study on corporeity, Luca Trevisani one of the most stimulating visual artists in the international panorama) and Sigourney Weaver (Biagio Caravano/Daniela Cattivelli) a musical group operating at the margins of exploratory sound and scenic action. Other non-identified presences undermine the compact edges of the performance which adopts a strategy of excavating into the technical gesture as a locus to renegotiate identity.
Le Instruction Series is a new productive module which mk is currently developing in co-operation with Xing. The objective is to produce compact and elastic formats with brief, lightening tempos which progress with a collaborative intent. The "istruzioni per una performance da compiere" (instructions to implement for a performance) are the key element in this distance choreography which are forwarded by proxy and e-mails to a series of extraordinary and ordinary characters who change every time. The choreographer's instructions are mere indications to trigger a process and are deliberately worded to be misinterpreted. The fact that the actors must fill in gaps to carry out the instructions and follow indications which they do not understand means that the author has no part in the development process but rather, relies on the organic nature of the group and its implementation of a series of images and acts. While the group plays with the parameters of "anyone" and "anywhere", the instructions demand a technical response, an in-depth answer irrespective of the topographical repositioning of the body by any activity. Interpreted as a chemical reaction the instructions allow us to observe the reaction of different elements (homogenous and heterogeneous reactions), their order and their velocity (instantaneous reactions/explosions, fast reactions/combustion, slow reactions/corrosion). There is no hierarchy or expectations in the project and everything just rots and spoils as it should.
