YUVAL AVITAL

The music that Yuval Avital presents to the listener is a formidable mix of cultures and styles, far removed both in space and time. We have a concert which opens with a Mediterranean sound to then move on to south-east Asia and later, to a more contemporary technique. An Israeli resident in Milan, Avital was born in 1997 in Jerusalem, a city where different cultures and religions have been stratified for centuries: perhaps these origins are inspiration for his musical talent which is which is equally stratified and varied. Both guitarist and composer, his music is characterised by a highly varied range of instruments and in this case, assembled with very unusual combination. This entails great understanding and close collaboration between Avital and the other musicians. The programme which consists of world première performances opens with Music for 7 n. 1, a composition for seven tenor recorders, inspired by a south-east Asian ensemble for bamboo instruments from the north Philippines. This will be performed by the ensemble The Running Seven which is a very singular group composed of excellent musicians. We then pass on to Sogni, ombre e paesaggi, a Sonata for pianoforte performed by the soloist Maria Grazia Bellocchio. Articulated in three movements, the composition shows an almost osmosis-like process of European classical music reproduced in a style something akin to percussion with middle-eastern elements and a touch of French spectralism of the 1900's. Music for 7 n. 6, Horror Vacui for seven accordions, delves into different complex, sonorous layers innervated by an obstinate, varicoloured and polyrhythmic beat. As soloist and conductor we have Sergio Scappini, a virtuoso accordion player who has been entrusted to performed world première performances of works by composers such as Francesconi, Corghi and Einaudi. Written especially for the Romaeuropa Festival, Leilit represent a meeting point and synthesis between ancient oral traditions and contemporary music, again typical of Avital's style and who will feature in this performance with a guitar solo. Other soloists stand out such as Eli Wande Montesanut and Baruch Mesert, two keis or spiritual leaders of the Ethiopian Jewish community and cantors of this ancient religious rite, accompanied by seven flautists and the same number of accordion players to form two groups of wind instruments which confront each other in a face to face counterpoint with Bellocchio on the pianoforte and conducted by Sando Gorli. The entire programme offers a panorama into the musical research of Avital, articulated so that each piece will present insight into his very original musical universe.
