According to the musicologist Hans-Eberhard Dentler, The Art of the Fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach, is somewhat comparable to the Sphinx: like a modern-day Oedipus, the violoncellist Mario Brunello resolves part of this enigmatic work in this new musical project. Flanked by the composer Teho Teardo and a well-seasoned group of artists, Brunello attempts to shed light on the enigma by taking the public into the most hidden recesses of one of the great musical masterpieces of all time. With "Bach: Street View" Brunello and Teardo journey in the heart of one of Bach's most complex and fascinating works dedicated to the Fugue, a polyphonic composition in which the single voices ―rather like musical lines ―meander and intersect like the streets and alleyways of a city. The objective of the project is to make every single voice stand out like a magnified image of Google Street View, letting us penetrate into all those nooks and crannies of the city. The music is accompanied by a series of images projected on a screen which, instead of trying to provide explanations, give the audience an imaginative and symbolic insight into the music and giving a visible form to the sublime and perfect architectural equilibrium of the work which is startlingly evident when studying Bach's musical score. L’Arte della Fuga is performed by an innovative ensemble created especially for this project. Brunello is accompanied by Teardo's live electronic music which permits the tempo to slow down, almost to immobility to let the listener grasp the most hidden detail and have a molecular vision of the music. The ensemble is composed of Danilo Rossi (viola), Amerigo Bernardi (double bass) and the virtuoso violinist and composer Alexander Balanescu, always at the forefront of varied and innovative musical styles. We also have contemporary jazz from Carla Bley and the rock beats of the Pet Shop Boys and the Yellow Magic Orchestra. Also part of the group is the virtuoso of ancient music Rolf Lislevand with his long-necked archlute which creates the sound of Bach's period.
More than a simple performance of this work, we have an all-round re-visitation of Bach's great composition. Brunello's mastery of the violoncello instinctively leaning towards an innovative rendition of the romantic and baroque classical repertoire, is dedicated once again to the works of Bach after admirably interpreting the Suites for Solo Violin and the Brandenburg Concertos. One of the most acclaimed contemporary composers and much sought-after by the cinema sector, Teardo's electronic elaboration is exemplary of the ever-closing gap between traditional and electronic instruments. L'Arte della Fuga deals with one of the cornerstones of music of all times, a theorem of sounds crowded with symbols, images, secrets and infused with timeless fascination.
