OFFICINE MARCONI world première performance version

The name “GRANULAR SYNTHESIS” is legendary in the world of new electronic music. Their performances never go unobserved, generating completely opposing reactions amongst the public, with some spectators bordering on the ecstatic, whilst others are furious, leaving the hall halfway through.
“Placing the spectator in an extreme condition” is in fact the motto of this duo, formed of Kurt Hentschlager and Ulf Langheinrich, with the name deriving from a digital synthesis technique, initially used for sound and then extended to images. Founded in 1991, the group has developed a range of hardware and software equipment for particularly sophisticated audiovisual creation, manipulation and reproduction used in their works - installations or performances - where rather than seducing, they aim to grasp the senses and submerge them. Sound has an added value because of its physical impact, the images projected onto several screens, to which we can add other light stimuli, arriving from all sides and turning into something between a horizon and a siege.
By using digital technology, this duo seems to want to raise the late romantic aesthetics of the total work of art to the umpteenth power, working in the direction of absolute immersion in the work. Pol - the name is inspired by magnetic polarities - in the words of Hentschlager and Langheinrich “is like a devouring nucleus of energy. The extreme intensity makes it possible to brush everything away and arrive at nothing. Nothing like a desert, a world full of hidden wealth.”
It is a breathtaking performance, thanks to the luminous, video and audio stimuli, which as in other works by “GRANULAR SYNTHESIS”, reach a sufficient intensity to generate sensory disorientation, imposing a different model of perception and different sensitivity. Pol uses samples by the singer Diamanda Galas, treated heavily in order to create an obscure vision of the relationship between man and machine. A prophecy of geneticists at work on a computer screen, almost as if DNA could be manipulated as Hentschlager and Langheinrich manipulate images and sounds using digital technology today.
