The drum and the sword: ancient Japanese arts rooted in Zen philosophy combined to attack our senses. “Chanbara“, a term defining a sword combat, is a potent mix of percussive energy and bold fencing movements.
To achieve the fast, sinuous and astonishing movements of the blades and the power of sound produced by the taiko – Japanese drums that range from 15 cm of diameter to 350 kg of weight of the enormous “miya-daiko” – the arts of the drum and the sword share the discipline of daily practice and the love for “wabi sabi”, the transcendental visions of ancient Japanese aesthetics.
“Chanbara” is therefore the coming together of two, highly spectacular, arts that together produce an intense pattern of alternating episodes drawn from Japanese traditions, modern sword-wielding gangster stories and small and unexpected comic openings.
