National Premiere
Three generations in two evenings, one evening for the females and the other for the males, both dedicated to Japanese modern and contemporary dance. Starting point in both evenings is the butô, a form that first appeared in 1959 as a new style that had little in common with both Japanese tradition and western dance, albeit inheriting some patterns and elements.
Founders of the butô were Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno, the teachers of Akira Kasai, the celebrated dancer famous for his physical ebullience and outstanding stage transformations who, in turn, is the teacher of the cosmopolite dancer Setsuko Yamada, both of whom are present with solo pieces.
The middle generation, on the other hand, includes Kota Yamazaki and Naoko Shirakawa. Kota’s fluid style, compared to ocean long waves, combines japanese tradition with western modernity and african elements. A few years younger than Kota, Naoko founded, with the coreographer Sakiko Oshima, H. Art Chaos, one of the leading contemporary dance companies in Japan, that was awarded “Dance of the Year 2000″ by the New York Times. Shirakawa, powerful and brilliant dancer, has found in solos her best expressive form since her famous solo interpretation of “Romeo and Juliet”.
In 1977 Yamada made his debut solo performance, Yamazaki learned butô and Hiroaki Umeda, invented a personal mix of traditional, contemporary and hip hop dance and technology for minimalist and radical shows in which he is not only choreographer and dancer but also stage designer as well as sound, video and lighting technician. He is the representative of the third generation, together with Ikuyo Kuroda, the sensual, aggressive and controversial cosmopolite choreographer – with experiences in Japan, Great Britain and France – as well as interpreter of European artists such as Josef Nadj.
