With the title Safety distance, Daniele Spanò offers us a musing on distance/nearness with emblematic values and serious social implications. The video installation is presented as a dramatic event of an unknown nature, represented by a white light and electronic pulsations: virtual and real spectators (those visiting the exhibit) crowd around, neither are able to intervene, become part of it, or participate. In this day and age, the virtual universe of Internet and social networks facilitates contact between people, allowing information to be exchanged easily and quickly. At the same time, in the real world, human relations have become increasingly more difficult and often problematic, caught in a grip of diffidence.

In his visual research Spanò, trained as a set designer, editor, and VJ, is characterized by a careful use of technology and minimalist appearance, it is not uncommon to see traditional techniques of manipulation in his images. What stands out is the momentum of these installations, obtained through quick cut editing and the use of videos disengaged from their usual supports- monitor or screens. In fact, his projections appear on building facades, pavements, walls, and so on, thus they come alive to enliven heterodox and average surfaces. Since 2005, Daniele Spanò has been personally exploring multimedia language and the influence new technologies have upon modern sentiments. From theatrical stagings to live performances, he always aims to create a visual architecture by liberating videos from their original supports: displays. In 2011, he was selected by Takeshi Kitano as an emerging artist to represent the contemporary Italian scene.
TECHNIQUE
His works are made up of audiovisual environments created through video projections and surround-sound environments. The videos are produced with chroma key compositing and the sound environments with ambient recordings mixed with electronic elaborations.
